The Liberals are projected to win 168 seats — four short of the 172 needed for a parliamentary majority — according to early results reported by Canadian media outlets, including the CBC.

Despite the minority status, the outcome is widely seen as a personal triumph for Carney, who led his party back from the brink just months after it trailed in most national polls.

Carney warns of US threats in victory speech

In an impassioned speech before supporters in Ottawa, Prime Minister Carney warned Canadians to remain united and vigilant in the face of what he described as aggressive moves by the US government.

In a shocking political reversal, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre — who had been leading in most opinion polls throughout 2024 — lost his seat in Carleton, Ontario.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation projected his defeat late Tuesday, signaling a major shift in voter sentiment.

Poilievre, known for his populist and combative style, had leaned heavily into a “Canada First” campaign, mirroring the playbook of US President Trump.

While this strategy energized a segment of his base, analysts say it may have alienated moderate voters wary of Trump-style politics crossing into Canada.

The election night also saw the resignation of New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, who lost both his seat and his role after eight years at the helm.

Singh’s loss in British Columbia adds to a growing sense of political realignment in the country.

As Parliament prepares to reconvene in the coming weeks, Carney will now begin negotiations with smaller parties to ensure stable governance.

He also confirmed that a conversation with President Trump is expected in the coming days, where both leaders will “discuss the future of two sovereign and independent nations.”
