Canada election 2025 results: Mark Carney’s Liberal party retains power but falls short of majority

Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has retained power in Canada’s 2025 federal election, pulling off a dramatic comeback but falling short of a majority government.

The victory marks a defining moment for Carney, who only recently assumed leadership after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation, and comes against the backdrop of rising tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump.

The Liberals are projected to win 168 seats — four short of the 172 needed for a parliamentary majority — according to early results reported by Canadian media outlets, including the CBC.

Despite the minority status, the outcome is widely seen as a personal triumph for Carney, who led his party back from the brink just months after it trailed in most national polls.

Carney warns of US threats in victory speech

In an impassioned speech before supporters in Ottawa, Prime Minister Carney warned Canadians to remain united and vigilant in the face of what he described as aggressive moves by the US government.

“President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us,” Carney declared. “We must never forget the lessons of betrayal. Our world has fundamentally changed.”

Carney referenced growing concerns among Canadians about Washington’s increasingly confrontational stance, particularly on issues such as trade, border sovereignty, and natural resources.

“We are over the shock of the American betrayal,” Carney said, “but we must now govern in a new reality.”

Carney’s message tapped into a rising wave of nationalistic sentiment and unease over Trump’s rhetoric, including controversial annexation remarks and proposed tariffs targeting Canadian goods.

The Liberal campaign effectively turned these external pressures into a unifying domestic message, helping to swing key battlegrounds back into their column.

Conservative leader Poilievre loses seat in stunning upset

In a shocking political reversal, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre — who had been leading in most opinion polls throughout 2024 — lost his seat in Carleton, Ontario.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation projected his defeat late Tuesday, signaling a major shift in voter sentiment.

Poilievre, known for his populist and combative style, had leaned heavily into a “Canada First” campaign, mirroring the playbook of US President Trump.

While this strategy energized a segment of his base, analysts say it may have alienated moderate voters wary of Trump-style politics crossing into Canada.

The defeat has prompted immediate speculation about the future of the Conservative Party’s leadership and direction.

Canada election results: key departures

The election night also saw the resignation of New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, who lost both his seat and his role after eight years at the helm.

Singh’s loss in British Columbia adds to a growing sense of political realignment in the country.

As Parliament prepares to reconvene in the coming weeks, Carney will now begin negotiations with smaller parties to ensure stable governance.

He also confirmed that a conversation with President Trump is expected in the coming days, where both leaders will “discuss the future of two sovereign and independent nations.”

The 2025 Canadian federal election has underscored not only a reshaped political map at home but also the deepening geopolitical rift between Ottawa and Washington — a theme likely to define Carney’s early tenure as prime minister.
