Upbit Trading Volume Jumps 273% as Bitcoin Rally Revives…

Why Is Trading Activity Surging On Upbit?

Trading activity on South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges has rebounded sharply as Bitcoin’s latest rally draws retail investors back toward digital assets after months of weak market participation.

Upbit processed about $1.84 billion in cryptocurrency transactions over the past 24 hours, a 273% increase and its highest daily trading volume since mid-March, according to CoinGecko data.

XRP generated the most activity on the exchange, with about $418.9 million in trades. Bitcoin, USDT and Ether followed, showing that the renewed interest is spreading beyond Bitcoin even though the largest cryptocurrency has led the market recovery.

Bithumb recorded a similar increase. South Korea’s second-largest crypto exchange handled about $934.9 million over the same period, up 132.9%, with XRP also ranking as its most-traded cryptocurrency.

The jump follows a prolonged period of weaker activity across South Korea’s crypto market. Digital asset prices had struggled through much of 2026, while domestic investors found stronger returns in equities, particularly semiconductor stocks linked to the artificial intelligence memory boom.

Why Did Korean Investors Move Away From Crypto?

South Korea’s KOSPI index climbed to record levels earlier this year as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix benefited from investor enthusiasm around memory chips and AI infrastructure. That rally drew capital toward local equities at the same time cryptocurrency prices were falling.

The impact was visible in the financial results of the country’s two largest exchanges. Upbit and Bithumb each reported operating revenue declines of roughly 50% during the first half of 2026.

Upbit’s net profit fell 74%, while Bithumb moved from a profit to a net loss. Lower trading activity is particularly damaging for crypto exchanges because transaction fees remain closely tied to customer volume.

Volatility in South Korean equities increased from late June, but semiconductor shares continued to hold investor attention. The latest cryptocurrency rebound is now testing whether some of that capital will return to digital assets.

Bitcoin rose about 7.2% over the latest 24-hour period to around $77,400, while the wider crypto market gained about 7%. The rebound followed the U.S. Treasury Department’s announcement of an expanded debt buyback program, which traders have linked to improving liquidity expectations.

Investor Takeaway

The volume spike shows Korean retail traders are returning quickly when crypto prices accelerate. The more important test is whether activity stays elevated after the initial rally, which would suggest fresh capital is moving back into digital assets rather than traders simply reacting to a two-day price surge.

Is Korean Capital Rotating Back Into Crypto?

It may be too early to describe the move as a sustained rotation. The increase in exchange activity has developed over only a few trading sessions, and South Korean investors remain heavily exposed to a stock market that has delivered strong returns this year.

Min Jung, associate researcher at Presto Research, said a larger flow into crypto could develop if the rally continues.

“While it’s too early to call this a rotation given it’s only been two days, we’d expect a much larger influx of capital into crypto if the rally holds,” Jung said. “There’s a growing sense that crypto still has room to run. KOSPI has already rallied hard this year while crypto lagged, so investors are starting to look at where the catch-up trade is.”

Jung described Korean retail investors as “return-chasing” rather than “asset-loyal,” meaning capital can move quickly between equities and cryptocurrencies depending on which market is delivering stronger performance.

That behavior could make the persistence of Bitcoin’s rally more important than any single domestic catalyst. Korean investors have historically tended to enter crypto after prices begin rising rather than provide the initial buying pressure.

Could Korean Traders Amplify The Crypto Rally?

South Korea has long been one of the most active retail cryptocurrency markets, and sharp increases in local trading can affect global liquidity despite the country accounting for only a fraction of worldwide crypto activity.

Jung said the likely sequence is that global momentum attracts Korean capital, which then adds further buying activity. “Korean capital tends to follow a rally rather than start one, so the more likely path is that global momentum pulls Korean money in, which then amplifies the move.”

XRP’s dominance on both Upbit and Bithumb is particularly notable. Korean traders have historically shown strong demand for altcoins, meaning renewed retail participation may benefit tokens beyond Bitcoin if risk appetite continues improving.

For Upbit and Bithumb, sustained volumes would also offer financial relief after a weak first half. Higher turnover directly increases transaction-fee revenue and could improve earnings if the recovery continues through the remainder of 2026.

The next few weeks will show whether the latest spike represents a short-lived reaction to rising prices or the beginning of a larger return of Korean retail capital to crypto. Continued gains in Bitcoin, stronger altcoin turnover and consistently elevated Upbit volumes would provide clearer evidence that investors are moving beyond the initial rebound.
