OpenAI’s Dots challenges Meta’s Muse in the race for AI agents

OpenAI jumped into the personal AI agent market on Tuesday with Dots, following Meta’s blockbuster Muse launch earlier this month and setting up what could become the next major battleground in artificial intelligence.

At its annual DevDay conference in San Francisco, OpenAI described Dots as “always-on” agents built to handle a wide range of tasks with minimal oversight.

Powered by OpenAI’s Astra model, Dots can connect to roughly 4,000 apps through ChatGPT, letting users delegate ongoing work like monitoring Slack alerts, digging into bugs, or catching a missed invoice.

OpenAI said it envisions teams of specialized Dots eventually working together on a user’s behalf, and the company is already integrating with Microsoft’s Agent 365 security controls to manage access and credentials.

Dots is rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, with an Enterprise beta available separately.

Meta’s head start

Meta’s Muse, released September 8, has driven one of the stock’s strongest runs in over a decade.

Shares are up roughly 30% in September, on pace for Meta’s best month since July 2013, when the stock rallied 48%.

The app topped Apple’s free App Store charts within days and had crossed 2.5 million US downloads by September 21, according to data by analytics firm Sensor Tower, cited in The Motley Fool report.

JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth raised his price target on Meta to $920 from $820 after the launch, writing that Muse has “the potential to become the most widely used consumer AI application since ChatGPT.”

Muse has since expanded into WhatsApp and Meta’s AI glasses, with integrations across Shopify, Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora, Expedia and Instacart, plus payment support through Stripe, Shop Pay and PayPal.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg called Muse the “centerpiece” of Meta’s AI strategy at last week’s Meta Connect conference, where the company also previewed new AI hardware, including a pendant device.

A crowded field, and a costly bet for OpenAI

OpenAI isn’t alone in chasing Meta.

Google markets Gemini Spark as a “24/7 personal AI agent,” and Apple has redesigned Siri to be what it calls “a profoundly more capable and personal assistant.”

Startups are racing in too: AI assistant company Instinct raised $1 billion from Sequoia and other investors this week at a $10 billion valuation, while rival startup Town is reportedly seeking a valuation near $1 billion of its own.

OpenAI’s timing comes as the company works to fund an increasingly expensive buildout.

Bloomberg reported that OpenAI is seeking to raise at least $30 billion in fresh funding at a valuation of roughly $1.4 trillion, well above the $852 billion it was valued at following a $122 billion round in March.

The company has delayed its planned IPO to prioritize AI safety work and navigate regulatory scrutiny.

That funding push comes even as OpenAI’s own annualized revenue run rate has climbed toward $70 billion.

The two companies are betting on different customers.

Muse is free with a usage cap, then $20 a month for full access.

Dots starts at OpenAI’s $100-a-month Pro tier, positioning it more toward professional users than the mass consumer audience Meta is targeting.

Download numbers alone don’t guarantee habitual use, and neither company has disclosed how many people are actively relying on their agents day to day rather than trying them once.
