Aswath Damodaran: Anthropic is not worth $1.5T

Anthropic could become one of the world’s biggest businesses and still disappoint investors who pay too much for its shares, according to Aswath Damodaran’s latest valuation of the AI research lab.

In a recent analysis following Anthropic’s prospectus filing, the NYU finance professor estimated its equity value at $1.475 trillion – below the $1.5 trillion to $2.0 trillion potential IPO valuation range cited in his assessment.

His calculation already assumes “spectacular commercial success,” leaving investors with a harder question: how much of that success would the offering price already capture?

Damodaran sees Anthropic’s sales exceeding $1 trillion

Damodaran’s base case puts Anthropic’s annual revenue near $1 trillion by 2036.

He sees an opportunity in premium AI services that can replace expensive white-collar work, with potential expansion into industries its technology helps disrupt.

That’s an ambitious foundation for a valuation below the anticipated offering range.

His model also assumes a 27.5% operating margin and a 9.74% cost of capital – which “discounts” future cash flows for time and risk.

The implication is that investors paying substantially more would need an even stronger outcome, whether through higher profitability, faster expansion, or greater durability.

Believing AI will transform business is only the starting point.

Shareholder returns depend on how much investors pay today for the profits that transformation eventually produces.

Computing costs complicate Anthropic’s software success story

Anthropic’s growth requires continuous investment in computing capacity.

Damodaran assumes it will need about $1 of reinvestment for every $3 in additional revenue. Chips age quickly, while more capable models can increase demand for infrastructure and electricity.

Regulation creates another constraint.

His model trims the assumed operating margin from 32.5% to 27.5% to reflect its impact – a five-percentage-point reduction.

Those assumptions explain why soaring sales don’t translate automatically into equally spectacular value.

Cash committed to supporting the next wave of growth can’t simultaneously flow to investors.

Likewise, improving operating efficiency offers less protection if compliance costs absorb some of the gains.

Investors must therefore examine the cash Anthropic retains after funding expansion, alongside its headline revenue growth and accounting profitability.

Damodaran’s valuation is a benchmark, not an IPO trading forecast

Aswath Damodaran’s scenarios underline how uncertain the outcome remains. His most optimistic case values Anthropic’s equity at $4.04 trillion; his pessimistic case leaves it worthless.

These are conditional outcomes, rather than predictions with assigned probabilities.

The NYU professor said he’d sit out an offering priced well above his valuation – but won’t short simply because the market might pay more.

He also wants a larger discount to compensate for governance concerns.

In short, a successful debut would demonstrate demand for the shares, but would reveal little about whether the purchase price offers attractive long-term returns.

Damodaran’s analysis supplies a practical discipline: decide which business assumptions justify the price before allowing the excitement surrounding the offering to make that decision.
