Caterpillar stock sinks after earnings: here’s the case for buying

Caterpillar (CAT) shares opened notably lower on Thursday even though the industrial equipment giant reported better-than-expected earnings for its fiscal Q3.

Investors wanted more confidence that Caterpillar Inc could sustain its recent growth, particularly from supplying power equipment for data centers.

But a roughly in line revenue of $20.68 billion and unchanged annual sales guidance offered little reassurance.

Yet the selloff creates a potentially attractive entry point for patient investors – Caterpillar’s orders are expanding, its earnings power is improving, and its cash flow offers financial flexibility.

Caterpillar stock is still up some 8% versus the start of this year.

A record backlog warrants buying Caterpillar stock

Caterpillar’s backlog reached $78.1 billion, increasing $6 billion from the previous quarter.

Although the pace of expansion slowed, the firm’s order book still grew from an already elevated base.

Management also maintained its forecast for annual revenue growth in the mid-to-high teens.

Slower order growth can justify more “conservative expectations” – but an expanding backlog still offers visibility into future equipment deliveries. The bullish interpretation is that clients continue committing capital even as shareholders grow more cautious.

Simply put, the buying case for CAT shares doesn’t require another acceleration in demand.

Converting existing commitments into profitable sales could support shareholder returns, provided execution holds up and the purchase price leaves room for disappointment.

CAT’s underlying profitability remains strong

Caterpillar’s operating profit increased 38% year-on-year to $4.214 billion, comfortably outpacing the 17% revenue increase.

That improvement included $128 million in tariff recoveries – a benefit investors should separate from recurring operations.

Even without those recoveries, operating profit would have risen about 34%, based on the reported figures.

That calculation suggests the improvement extends well beyond a helpful reimbursement.

For prospective buyers of Caterpillar shares, this is clear evidence of “operating leverage”: higher equipment volumes are producing disproportionately larger profits.

If demand remains resilient, CAT can potentially grow earnings without needing an equally large increase in revenue.

All in all, investors do have a credible reason to question whether today’s share-price hit adequately reflects the company’s improved ability to turn sales into profit.

What else makes CAT shares worth buying?

Caterpillar generated $4.4 billion in enterprise operating cash flow during the quarter and finished September with $7.9 billion in cash.

It also repurchased $1.2 billion of shares. Operating cash flow precedes capital expenditure, but those figures demonstrate substantial financial capacity.

That flexibility matters when sentiment deteriorates.

It gives management resources to fund operations and investment while continuing shareholder distributions.

Repurchases at lower prices can also retire more shares for the same expenditure, supporting future per-share earnings.

The decline alone does not establish that CAT stock is cheap, and further weakness remains possible.

The stronger argument for buying is that investors now have a lower entry price into a business with expanding commitments and improving profitability.

For investors willing to hold through an industrial cycle, that combination makes a measured purchase worth considering.
