Coinbase Opens IPO Allocations to Eligible US Retail…

How Will Coinbase’s IPO Access Work?

Coinbase is giving eligible U.S. retail customers access to initial public offering allocations through its app, starting with smart-ring maker Oura’s IPO this week as the crypto exchange expands deeper into traditional financial markets.

Customers will be able to request shares before public trading begins and buy them at the IPO offer price. Requests will not guarantee an allocation: investors may receive all, part or none of the shares they request depending on demand and the size of the offering.

The securities are being offered through Coinbase Capital Markets, with Apex providing execution, clearing and custody. That makes the product fundamentally different from synthetic or derivative products that merely track the value of private companies.

“This new feature is yet another step toward growing the Everything Exchange, as our US customers now gain early exposure to high-interest companies before they hit public exchanges,” Coinbase said.

The launch extends a traditional brokerage operation Coinbase has been building throughout 2026. The company previously expanded into U.S. stock and ETF trading through Coinbase Capital Markets and Apex, allowing customers to hold conventional securities alongside digital assets inside the same application.

Why Is IPO Access Different From Coinbase’s Pre-IPO Perpetuals?

The distinction matters because Coinbase is now offering two very different ways to gain exposure to companies before or around their public-market debut.

In June, Coinbase launched pre-IPO perpetual futures for eligible customers outside the United States, starting with SpaceX. Those contracts provide synthetic price exposure to private companies without giving traders ownership of the underlying shares.

The SpaceX product also showed that demand for pre-IPO derivatives can become substantial. SpaceX pre-IPO futures reached $976 million in peak open interest and generated $10.9 billion in monthly volume in June as real-world-asset derivatives gained traction across crypto-native trading venues.

The new IPO service instead puts U.S. customers into the actual securities offering. Successful applicants receive shares through a regulated broker-dealer structure rather than a derivative whose value follows the expected price of a private company.

That creates a clearer separation between ownership and price exposure. A pre-IPO perpetual allows a trader to speculate on what a company may eventually be worth. An IPO allocation gives an investor shares issued through the public offering itself.

Investor Takeaway

Coinbase is no longer simply adding more assets to a crypto exchange. IPO allocations move the platform into the primary securities market, giving U.S. customers access to a stage of the investment cycle that traditionally sits with brokerage firms and investment banks.

What Does This Mean for Coinbase’s Everything Exchange Strategy?

IPO access fills another gap in Coinbase’s attempt to cover multiple stages of an asset’s lifecycle inside one platform.

U.S. customers can already trade listed stocks and ETFs through Coinbase Capital Markets, while eligible investors outside the country have access to tokenized equities and pre-IPO derivatives. Coinbase has also said U.S. customers can transfer existing stock portfolios onto the platform as it expands its conventional brokerage offering.

The company is simultaneously pursuing derivatives tied to public equities. Coinbase recently filed with the CFTC to launch perpetual futures linked to individual U.S. stocks, including companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Tesla and Nvidia.

Taken together, those products would allow Coinbase to serve investors at several points: synthetic exposure before an IPO, participation in the IPO itself, trading of shares after listing and potentially perpetual futures linked to those shares.

The front end may increasingly look like a single financial marketplace, even though the products sit inside different legal and operational structures. Securities are handled through Coinbase Capital Markets, derivatives require separate regulatory frameworks, and crypto remains governed through Coinbase’s digital asset businesses.

Why Could IPO Distribution Matter for Coinbase?

For Coinbase, the strategic value is partly about reducing dependence on crypto trading cycles. Stock brokerage, derivatives and primary-market distribution give the company more opportunities to generate customer activity when cryptocurrency volumes weaken.

IPO access could also help Coinbase compete more directly with retail brokerage platforms that have spent years trying to open new listings to individual investors rather than leaving most allocations with institutional clients and wealthier brokerage customers.

The larger question is whether Coinbase can turn its existing crypto user base into a multi-asset investor base. Customers who initially opened accounts to buy bitcoin or stablecoins can increasingly use the same application for stocks, ETFs, derivatives and now selected IPOs.

Oura will provide the first test. But the more important measure will be how frequently Coinbase can secure future IPO allocations and whether retail customers treat the platform as a place to access traditional capital markets, rather than simply a crypto exchange with additional products attached.
